Jeff Tomaszewski founded MaxStrength Fitness to put into place a science- and research- based training protocol that he spent decades perfecting.
While he was a graduate student in exercise physiology at Case Western Reserve University, he conducted his own study as the basis for his master’s
thesis. Its findings pointed to the key role of strength training in improving a person’s overall cardiovascular efficiency.
Although he went on to work as a professor and athletic trainer at Case, the impact of his study stayed with him. It led to the methodology behind MaxStrength.
Twice-Weekly Workouts Trigger Change
“We hit upon the sweet spot for attaining profound and adaptive change in the body,” he explains. “Two 20-minute workouts per week, led by a professional trainer on advanced equipment aimed at fatiguing the muscles, is the most efficient, results-driven way to exercise. Having a break between sessions allows the fatigued muscles to fully rebuild. In some ways, this paradigm is the opposite of most gyms, where people hang out. When I hear people say they spend five to six days per week at the gym, I can’t help but think how they are spinning their wheels. We created a framework in which our clients reap the greatest reward in the shortest amount of time.”
Years after he founded MaxStrength, scores of clinical research from health institutions such as Harvard Medical School and the Journal of the American Medical Association have corroborated his findings.
“Our goal is to help people achieve transformational results—get in the best shape of their lives and stay that way well into their golden years,” says Jeff.
He also explains that he designed the protocol to appeal to today’s super-busy lives.
“Although the workouts are challenging, since we keep studio temps in the 60s, there’s no sweating involved,” says Jeff. “Our clients can pop in on their lunch hour or early morning before work without needing to shower afterward. People find this is game-changing in sticking to our program.”
High-Efficiency Tools for Safer, Smarter Workouts Jeff says precision, computerized equipment plays a key role in how different MaxStrength is from other places. As the only facility in the country to offer three systems (MedX, David and SuperSlow) to produce low friction and maximum muscular tension, the trainers have always felt the caliber of equipment is key to providing the most efficient, effective and safest exercise experience possible.
“The right equipment can help increase strength, energy, flexibility and mobility,” says Jeff. “As we age, we all suffer from sarcopenia (the wasting away of muscle tissue), which can lead to decreased activity, increased joint pain, elevated blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Research shows high-intensity strength training can combat all these changes and it doesn’t take hours in the gym to produce them.”
He says once a client signs up at MaxStrength, they tend to stay for years. “We want our clients to move throughout their day without joint pain or stopping to catch their breath,” says Jeff. “We want them to play with their grandchildren without being exhausted and to be confident in their movements, thanks to healthy bone density and balance. Their days shouldn’t be filled with doctor visits or trips to the pharmacy to pick up medications so they can function.”
